Question
I'm considering doing my helicopter training at Silver State Helicopters. I have always wanted to be a helicopter pilot. What are the benefits of selecting Silver State Helicopters over a smaller flight academy? Also, will I be able to transfer to another flight academy if I move?
Answer
Do not sign a contract for training. If you do not have the aptitude or find that you do not like it, you will lose money. Find a palce where you pay as you go. You may not need all the ground training they force on you. You definitely need to evaluate the viability of any simulator training. Simulators are subject to wear and tear, and subsequently may or may not provide realistic or productive training opportunity, especially in the helicopter world. In fact, simulators are, more often than not, negative training beyond 10 hours. Research this school thoroughly. They make promises all day long with no ability to fulfill them. Find a smaller, privately owned place. Look for instructor/student ratio of 1:8 or smaller. Look for Instructor/aircraft ratio of 2:1. Big school does not equal big jobs or employment at all. Silver State does not pay 52K/year. They pay a graduated hourly scale, based on flight hours. You will not (typically) top out at 25/hour until you have invested 2.5 years of your life with them (1.5 for training and 1 year as CFI). Then the typical CFI is working 12-14 hours to be paid for 8. They do not pay for your time spent scheduling, meetings, etc. Permalink:
